Flower Beds

First I clean out everything that doesn't go there (weeds), then I lower the bed level so when an inch of bark mulch is added, it will stay in the bed and not wash onto the walkways.

It turns an eyesore into a lovely place to be.

This is obviously in the same back yard as above, looking the other way.

The bench at the end of the path has become a pleasant seat.

When working beds that adjoin lawn, I clean out everything that doesn't go there, cut a new lawn edge and lower the level of the bed.

And finally, I apply a weed and grass herbicide and fine bark mulch.

The difference...

...can be dramatic.

This is a dying sage groundcover.

Cut an edge, re-contour the bed, and apply bark mulch.

Sometimes all that's wanted is...

...a new edge cut.

When edging without new bark, I pull back the existing bark,...

...cut and dig the edge, and reposition the bark.
